It’s not the last day of work, as I have plenty of re-organizing to do...but after three years, it’s the last day with these eighth graders. (They all consented to their “performance” being televised.)
I’m ready to recharge. Speaking honestly, this group DRAINED me for three years, but they made it worth it. I honestly believe I’m sending them away better than I received them. A lot of them are NOT going to our feeder high school (I teach in a high-military family, high mobility area), so I’m not going to see many of them going forward, and the ones who ARE going to our high school, many are not continuing band. It’s a little bittersweet, but few things are more poisonous to a high school band than a player who has no desire to be there.
Hope your day is going well, Oppo!

Also, band kids are best kids.

Last day is tomorrow. It’s a half day. I’ve never understood this half day shit. I feel like, as a parent, I paid for a full day’s escape education, and I want my money’s worth. Nothing gets done on half days anyway.

Mine’s about to become a band kid again after a year’s hiatus. The catholic high school band leader is bringing fledgling band programs to the area middle schools. Time to dust off the flute.

mines convinced she wants to be a band kid....but has the attention span of a goldfish and no patience
she tends to obsess about an instrument untill we get her one play her ass off on it for a week or two maybe even a month before she decides its just taking too long to get good at it and quietly forgets about it
till she obsesses about the next instrument
( we actually bought the first few instruments... but once we noted the pattern we just started borrowing spare instruments... my family is pretty musical)
we’d get her lessons but the girl dont wanna.... she has youtube for that apparently

Yeah, that works until I have to register her for band as an actual class with an actual grade. As long as she understands that she has to stick with it for at least that semester, I’m fine with it. I don’t need her to make it a career, just see her commitment through.

mines not big on commitment
little worried about next year as shes off to art college... she is really quite good at painting/drawing/animating stuff she wants t0... im a little concerned about her motivation levels when she realizes she’ll have to also paint/draw/animate stuff she doesnt want to
anyhoo.... its a bear getting her to want to do anything as she’d much rather not do anything...
sorry rambling a lil

My kids have a half day every Wednesday. My wife and I are both teachers without a half day on Wednesday. It sucks.

Sometimes a dad needs to ramble, especially when he's worried about his kids.
